Freddie CEO Feels Strain of Firm's Twin Missions

Washington Post (08/06/08) P. D1; Birnbaum, Jeffrey H.; Hilzenrath, David S.
The dual missions of Freddie Mac have made it "almost impossible" to lead the government-sponsored enterprise, Chief Executive Richard Syron says in an interview. Syron says he must focus on creating profit for investors, but that Freddie Mac is also charged with improving the housing market. He defended his decision to purchase risky mortgages earlier in the decade, saying the investments were made to boost the housing market and also to make money for shareholders. Syron also says Freddie Mac showed some restraint on subprime mortgages.
