Senate leaders plan to outline a housing bill on April 2, a day after Republicans agreed to work with Democrats on a compromise plan. GOP lawmakers were prepared to oppose a Democratic bill once again on Monday, after blocking legislation in February; but they said a sense of urgency to address the housing crisis prompted them to reach the agreement with Democrats. Senators on both sides of the aisle want stronger truth-in-lending laws for mortgage lenders, to provide counseling to homeowners facing foreclosure and to help borrowers refinance their homes. However, some Republicans do not want to give bankruptcy judges the authority to modify the terms of a borrower's mortgage, and the White House is also opposed to providing $4 billion to purchase foreclosed homes.
