State Closes Title Company

Baltimore Sun (05/30/08); Cho, Hanah
Day Title Inc., a Maryland-based real estate title company, has been ordered shut down after approximately $2 million from its escrow account for property settlements allegedly turned up missing. This development follows an order issued a week earlier by an Anne Arundel County Circuit Court judge appointing a receiver to oversee Day Title's liquidation. The court action was initiated by The Security Title Guarantee Corp. of Baltimore, which has assumed responsibility for Day Title's undetermined number of unpaid mortgages and other settlement costs. Security Title has charged Day Title and owner Deborah Williams with "gross negligence and mishandling of escrow funds" involving Day Title's escrow account in the Baltimore suburb of Severna Park.
