DeMint Wants Lobbying Ban for Mortgage Giants

Greenville News (SC) (07/18/08); Abrahms, Doug
If the government-sponsored enterprises are to be given help from the federal government, Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., says he will propose an amendment that would prevent them from lobbying. DeMint states, "Currently, the Department of Treasury cannot retain high-powered lobbyists or make political contributions to candidates, and the same rules should apply to Fannie and Freddie. If we plan to use taxpayer dollars to buy shares of these troubled companies, they should be treated like other federal entities." Senate disclosure records indicate that Fannie Mae paid its 11 lobbyists a total of $565,000 during the first half of this year, while Freddie Mac paid its 25 lobbyists more than $1 million.
